This historic 1967 BBC adaptation of Emily Brontë's romantic masterpiece stars Ian McShane (Deadwood, Lovejoy), and is available on DVD for the first time ever!
Wuthering Heights is a heartrending story of unrequited love and sibling rivalry. When the dark brooding orphan boy Heathcliff enters the Earnshaw household at Wuthering Heights, he is at first shunned by his new stepsiblings, Catherine and Hindley. Catherine's feelings toward Heathcliff soon change, however, and the two fall deeply in love, but Hindley's rivalry with Heathcliff only deepens with time.
When Hindley eventually inherits the estate, he treats Heathcliff as little more than a servant, and when Catherine later marries a neighboring landowner who can offer her social advancement, Heathcliff's humiliation is complete, and he charts a course of revenge that will have tragic consequences for everyone.
The BBC and distributor Warner Home Video is bringing out a classic from 1967, a mini-series adaption of Wuthering Heights. It stars Ian McShane as "Heathcliff", in an earlier role during an acting career that spans over 45 years. The complete 4-part production, running 195 minutes, is included along with bonus interviews. Video is full frame, audio is English Stereo, and there are English subtitles as well. Cost is $14.98 SRP, and it's available October 13th.

I have heard that this version is very good and Ian McShane is a perfect Heathcliff and a very good and handsome actor and definitely the most attractive Heathcliff to date. I would love to see this series (As My mother remembers this being as being very dark and full of atmosphere) but I am a UK resident and I don't think it will be available over here.
ReplyDeleteAlthough my mother has told me that the 1978 version with ken Hutchinson does stay closer to the novel, however I would still like to to watch this series as it might make up for the dread-full version with Tom Hardy.
LES SŒURS BRONTË - FRENCH 1979-THE BRONTE SISTERS- AMAZING !
ReplyDeleteI am saddened to hear being released for the American market as I am one of many who would like to buy it in the UK
