RITA MARIA MARTINEZ’s first chapbook of poetry, Jane-in-the-Box (March Street Press, $9) is about a modern literary Jane Eyre who shops at Macy’s and walks in a world of tattoos. Poet Denise Duhamel calls her poems “literary, conversational, personal,” and “fun.” Martinez’s work has appeared in numerous poetry journals and literary magazines, including Gulf Stream, Ploughshares and Burnt Sugar Caña Quemada: Contemporary Cuban Poetry in English and Spanish. She lives in Ft. Lauderdale.

2. The Western Australian Academy of Arts (WAAPA) exhibits the costumes (designed by Kate Marchant) of their recent production of Gordon & Caird's Jane Eyre. The Musical in Perth: (picture source)
‘Behind the Scenes’, an exhibition showcasing the talented work of WAAPA’s 3rd Year graduating Production & Design students, will be on display from Monday 3 to Friday 7 November in the foyer of QVI, St Georges Terrace, Perth.
The exhibition will incorporate the original works of WAAPA’s talented Costume, Design, Props and Scenery students, recalling the great moments and productions from WAAPA’s diverse performance program.
Cloudstreet, West Side Story, Sweeney Todd, Lysistrata, Noises Off, Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Crucible and Jane Eyre are just some of the fantastic shows that will feature in this exhibition alongside costumes from many great dance seasons.
The exhibition hopes to attract theatre and performing arts enthusiasts, industry professionals and the general public with a special emphasis on attracting schools and universities, acting as a means of education and a reaffirmation of the important contribution of the performing arts to the Western Australian community.
The exhibition space itself is to be designed by current WAAPA students and will use innovative means to display the dynamic collection of garments, photographs and designs.
