Jane Eyre

Houghton High School
November 14, 15 7 pm
November 22 at the Calumet Theatre.

Directed by David Crowley
From WLUC-TV6:
It's a story most read in high school English class. A young governess, orphaned shortly after birth, falls in love with her employer. But, a secret past threatens to keep them apart.
Houghton High School hopes to bring Charlotte Bronte's tale of Jane Eyre to life this weekend, in the Alumni Auditorium at Houghton High School.
"It's a show for college students," said junior, Hannah Moran. "It's a tough show to pull off, but I think we're going to do okay."
"I like it when Jane starts to be happy," says senior, Katie Zutter, who plays Eyre. "It seems like she deserved it because she's had such a hard life and not necessarily anything was her fault."
Twenty students have practiced for the past two months. They hope selecting a literary classic will draw in large crowds this weekend. (Jeni Jewell)
The Mining Gazette adds:
"Jane Eyre," written by Charlotte Bronte in 1847, has never been out of print since its' debut.
"That's one of the reasons I picked it," Director David Crowley said. "There are a lot of people who have that name recognition and I thought it would be a good audience draw."
Crowley also picked the piece to introduce a challenging play to the cast of Houghton High School.
The relatively young cast, comprised of several freshmen and sophomores, a couple of juniors and a senior has been rehearsing lines and scenes from Jane Eyre for weeks to prep for the stage production.
"As I was reading it, I thought it had the quality that could challenge the kids," Crowley said. "I want this program to be something where they get more out of it than just having fun." (Stacey Ashcroft)
3. We don't know if there are many naturist-Brontëites out there, but in any case, this could be of interest to them:
Third BN Alton Towers Naturist Weekend 14–16 November, 2008

SIGs – already confirmed are a Sailing SIG gathering and a Book SIG discussion – keep an eye out for details of which book will be discussed – and make sure you read it in advance! Just announced - book will be Wuthering Heights!
4. And finally a conference (?) at the University of Salford on which we have been unable to find any other information apart from this announcement:

The Brontes in Context (II): The Professor and Agnes Grey
14-15 November 2008,
Centre for Literary Studies; Institute for Social, Cultural and Policy Research
University of Salford (UK)

Meant as a follow-up to the very successful first “The Brontes in Context” conference, this conference aims to re-read The Professor and Agnes Grey as well as contextualise the novels in the light of historically informed research of contexts.
