Justine Picardie - in an article published in
The Telegraph - is definitely our kind of girl when it comes to Gothic fashion.
As for me: well, I'll be doing my bit for the Gothic revival by rereading Wuthering Heights while eating some exceedingly dark chocolate; thus obviating the need for black lipstick, in a new look known as frugal Goth.
Also tempting is travelling all around the world following in the footsteps of great authors. A while ago we discovered a book that can guide you in that respect:
Novel Destinations: Literary Landmarks from Jane Austen’s Bath to Ernest Hemingway’s Key West, by Shannon McKenna Schmidt and Joni Rendon. The book was briefly reviewed by the
Chicago Tribune recently.
They cover Bronte country (Yorkshire) and Hardy country (Dorset) but also Steinbeck country (Monterey and Salinas, Calif.) as well as literary Parisian cafes and New York bars for bibliophiles. A fun read whether for armchair travelers or actual literary pilgrims. (June Sawyers)
Not so pleasurable - to put it mildly - is the fact that
once again Jane Eyre has made it into America's Next Top Model. From
TV Grapevine:
We get 44 year old looking Susan who just graduated from Harvard and I’m thinking she didn’t have a heart to heart with her academic advisor since she wound up here. She majored in English Literature. Tyra asks her who her favorite English lit heroine is and she halts, and stammers. Finally Tyra prods with a Jane Eyre? Rebecca? And it’s a sad sad commentary on the Ivy League system when Tyra outsmarts you. Sit down.
Both sad and scary.
As for blogs, we have found a Spanish one -
Entre Nómadas - that aptly links Charlotte's visit to the 1851 London International Exhibition to this years's
Expo in Zaragoza.
