Time: 6.30pm
Price: £7, £5 concessions
Venue: St. Nicholas Centre
Description:
Justine Picardie’s memoir, If the Spirit Moves You, was a bestseller in 2002. Her new novel, Daphne, based on the Bronte family’s hidden letters, is the story of Daphne du Maurier’s obsession with the renegade Bronte brother, Branwell. She becomes haunted by Rebecca, heroine of her famous novel, whilst her only confidante is her cousin, who inspired J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan.
The story moves to present-day London, where a lonely young woman becomes absorbed in the literary mystery as she struggles with her PhD thesis on du Maurier. Blurring fiction and reality, Daphne draws together some of the greatest literary families of the past.
Justine Picardie has been Features Editor on British Vogue and is currently columnist for the Sunday Telegraph Magazine. She talks to Kate Drayton, Lecturer in Modern Literature at the University of East Anglia, who specialises in eighteenth and nineteenth century women’s writing.
