The very evening before her last morning dawned I read to her one of Emerson's essays--I read on till I found she was not listening--I thought to recommence next day--Next day, the first glance at her face told me what would happen before night-fall.
~ Charlotte Brontë to William Smith Williams, 25 June 1849
Thus described Charlotte Brontë the last hours of her sister Emily, who died on 19 December 1848. Last year we posted another account of this sad event written to her lifelong friend Ellen Nussey.

Theories abound on Emily Brontë's death, concerning both its cause and the events around it. The simple truth is that regardless of what she died from or why she died for, that day the world lost a great writer that could have only got better and better given the time.
