Out of Character is the title of the debut novel of Vanessa Craft. The novel is full of Jane Eyre references because as we read in Getting Unstuck:
This is the story of Emma, a bookish 30-something woman who relishes (and recites) Jane Eyre (in normal conversation, which is awesome) and works at an edgy magazine, where she goes undercover as a dancer (a nice term strippers use to describe themselves).
An example:
"In a minute," said Ben. He flicked through Jane Eyre, stopping several times before settling on a spot. He read: "...a tale my imagination created ... quickened with all of incident, life, fire, feeling, that I desired and had not in my actual existence."
"What do you desire, Emma?"he asked. "Do you know?"
"I'm familiar with that passage," Emma said snatching the book from Ben. "And it's none of your business." ( excerpt from page 216)
