That Harold Bloom guide sounds interesting. From what I understand he is real "old school" in terms of literary criticism. He has no patience for the entire post-modernist, deconstructionist, etc crap infesting Universities since the 1960s. Here is an intellectual who actually believes the primary purpose of reading is aesthetic pleasure and making yourself a better person not trying to pick apart a book to find some hidden Marxist or political message, etc. Also, he is a real believer in there is such a thing as great books and the Western Canon.
ReplyDeleteYes, that's what we know of Harold Bloom as well. We have a compilation made by him and like it very much. And his analysis of Jane Eyre can be nothing short of interesting.
ReplyDeleteBut he can also be quite harsh at times. He doesn't hide his dislike of the Harry Potter series, for instance.
