The Denver Post has brought to our attention Withering Heights: An Ellie Haskell Mystery by Dorothy Cannell. The book was only just released in April this year. According to their article,
Ellie Haskell, the formerly fat heroine of the author's classic cozy The Thin Woman, heads for Bronte country with her husband Ben and her flamboyant, detection-minded housekeeper Mrs. Malloy. Their journey is precipitated by an unexpected visit from Ben's teenage cousin Ariel Hopkins, who shows up in tears on their doorstep after having run away from the Gothic mansion her father and stepmother have just bought with lottery winnings.
Cragstone House, surrounded by the endless Yorkshire moors, is every bit as atmospheric as Ellie dreamed it would be. And just as Ariel said, strange things are happening there. The cook has been put out of commission by a fall down the stairs, the former owner's husband has gone missing and is presumed murdered, and some malicious pranks have wreaked havoc with an upcoming garden party.
It's a veritable meringue of a book, light and crisp and airy, but with enough of a puzzle to engage as well as entertain the reader. (Tom and Enid Schantz)
The synopsis on the publisher's website is very similar, with few variations.
Ellie has always thought it would be wonderful to be the heroine of a Gothic romance, but now she’s beginning to wonder: Will she be able to solve the mystery and get out of Bronte country with her life, and her marriage, intact?
Intriguing, huh?
