Some time ago
we posted about the works of the British composer John Joubert related with the Brontë sisters. An opera based on Jane Eyre (1997) (Opus 134), a song cycle based on six poems by Emily Brontë (1968, Opus 63) and a Lyric Fantasy based on themes of the opera Jane Eyre (2000, Op. 144).
The 80th anniversary of the composer
is celebrated this year with several concerts around and with the edition of new CDs. SOMM Recordings releases this month
John Joubert: Chamber and Instrumental Works that includes
Lyric Fantasy for Piano Op.144 on themes from the opera
Jane EyrePlayed by Mark BebbingtonThe Times covers this release:
A great 80th birthday present for the neglected British composer John Joubert: seven works, six first recordings. The Brodsky Quartet’s second string quartet is the highlight: a passionate reading just slightly dented by Joubert’s tendency to overwork motifs. Look out, too, for the Piano Trio, and the pianist Mark Bebbington’s lovely way with the Lyric Fantasy from the opera Jane Eyre. A two-disc set to explore with delight. (Geoff Brown)
Next month, Toccata Classics will release
John Joubert: Song Cycles that includes Six Poems by Emily Brontë. With
Lesley-Jane Rogers (soprano), John Turner (recorder), John McCabe (piano).
