Gordon Brown was recently compared to Mrs Rochester. The Times makes the most of this comparison by claiming:
The slur-du-jour at Westminster is to say that Gordon Brown is just like Mrs Rochester, the mad woman in the attic of Charlotte Brontë’s novel Jane Eyre. Yes, I know, it seems weird to me too. The comparison was first made this week by Frank Field, the semidetached Labour backbencher.
“Allowing Gordon Brown into No 10 would be like letting Mrs Rochester out of the attic,” he insisted. He is a huge fan of the Chancellor, as you can tell. (Ann Treneman)
But it's not just The Times. This is what took place yesterday in the House of Commons according to its Publication. George Osborne - a Tory MP - addressed Mr Brown as follows:
1 Mar 2007 : Column 1052
Now look, that is not the only such event this week. What does the Chancellor say to the former Home Secretary, who served with him in the Cabinet, who said yesterday that thanks to the Chancellor, the Labour Government was sleepwalking to disaster? Does Mrs. Rochester agree?
Charlotte, who was such a fan of the happenings in politics, would have been thrilled to hear something like this!
