Anne Brontë is 187 years-old today and looking very well. Of late, each year that goes by Anne has grown to be appreciated by more and more people. Since her last birthday we have noticed a few more articles mentioning her and her works, many talks that debate and study her literary output and many bloggers that review both her novels and poetry.

After many years of being the 'sister in the shadow' this is very gratifying. Some writer claimed Anne Brontë 'would have passed for a genius in any other family'. It is one of BrontëBlog's goals that Anne passes for a genius in her own family, since that is what she was.

As usual with all things concerning Anne Brontë, the picture is courtesy of Mick Armitage's fantastic Scarborough Connection site. Charlotte made this painting on 17 June 1834, when Anne was 14.
EDIT: F. W. Boreham wrote an article on May 28 (Anne's death anniversary), 1949. It has been posted here. The author - as was the trend at the time - seems to think that Anne's work lacked vigour. Well, we all know it doesn't.

  1. What a joy it is to say "Happy Birthday" to Anne among people who can feel what I'm saying.

    "Well, let them seize on all they can;
    One treasure still is mine,
    A heart that loves to think on thee,
    And feels the worth of thine."

    And the tribute you wrote on your blog was beautiful - I loved reading it!
