What would our Jane say if she found out she could be bought for just 8 euros? Fortunately for her, it's only someone with a name like hers but it's definitely not the Jane Eyre from our well-loved book. Judge for yourself looking at the picture!A Spanish publishing house recently launched a collectable called "Damas de Época" where classic literary figures would be reproduced as dolls. Jane Eyre is number three and is now out on the street.
It's a curious little thing. Certainly not plain or badly done as a doll but certainly not Jane Eyre. At the back of the booklet, which is about dolls in the 19th-20th centuries, we find that the publishers have taken Jane Eyre as the embodiment of the stereotypical Victorian woman, not bearing in mind that Jane Eyre wasn't stereotypical (or Victorian according to most scholars who think Charlotte dated back her story). There is a couple of pages on Jane Eyre and the text - for what we are used to seeing in Spanish publications - seems highly accurate. They even comment on Jane not being a beautiful woman.

ReplyDeleteThanks for that! I knew the clothes of the Brontës' time weren't like that but I didn't know the exact period.
ReplyDeleteAs I said they state she's been made "Victorian" not realising that the Victorian Era spanned over 60 years comprising many changes in fashion.
