It has been a while since we have reported a fashion Brontë-related connection but in the on-going New Zealand Fashion Week there is a new example. The designer Caroline Church has presented her new Winter 2007 collection titled "The Effect of the Wind". This is how it is described in the designer's webpage:[Picture source: JOHN SELKIRK/Dominion Post. You can see another one here.]
Jennifer Collwill reviews the show in The Stuff like this:The Winter 2007 collection is titled "The Effect of the Wind" - a key inspiration is the novel Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte. The Caroline Church muse is free-spirited, beautiful, motivated by impulse, cheeks flushed and hair dishevelled by the wind. Her passion causes her to flaunt convention, as did Catherine’s, her love for Heathcliff transcending all boundaries:
. . . Heathcliff . . . shall never know how I love him . . . he’s more myself than I am. Whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same . . .
Colours reflect the colours of the wide, wild expanses of the moors - emerald green, heathery mauve, grey, chocolate brown along with light and rich accents of ivory, gold and blush. Fabrics are a textured mix of lace, mohair wools, satin and fine suiting.
Categories: Wuthering_Heights, WeirdoBarren trees lined the stage of the popular Caroline Church show The Effect of the Wind. The sound of Kate Bush's Wuthering Heights filled the room as models showed knee-length jackets, slimline knee-length skirts and fitted trousers.
One fuller skirt was elasticised in an area at the back, creating a small bustle.
The collection also featured a number of full-length dresses, including a pale lemon number that cried out for dancing, that was bound with a bold black sash.
Long, ribbon ties were a key feature of her dresses and skirts, with some ties extending below the knee.
