The Shirley country is really on the news lately. Some weeks ago we talked about the launch of a Shirley country guide and the different events that will be performed. Now we read on the Birstall Today how Oakwell Hall (Shirley's Fieldhead) has been given charity status.

The Friends of Oakwell Hall are overjoyed with the news at being granted charity status and said that it would enable them to apply for more grants and keep Oakwell accessible to everyone. Friends chairman Nigel Hudson said: "It will open up all sorts of doors for possibly obtaining money, grants and that type of thing. "That in itself will be a big help. The charity status applies just to the hall, not to the grounds around it. "As far as the friends are concerned we are highly delighted." The Friends group works alongside rangers and staff to improve the popular country park and visitor facilities which is enjoyed by thousands each year.
