Vivat Trust has a bunch of historical properties across Great Britain. Among them is
North Lees Hall - one of the places that claim being the model for Thornfield Hall in Jane Eyre. This one, apart from some obvious similarities offers the following reasons:
-
Thorn is an anagram of
North and
Field is another word for
Lees.
- They Eyres of Hathersage owned the place.
- There supposedly was a madwoman in the attic who died in a fire.
- Charlotte's description in Jane Eyre is quite fitting for the actual place:
... advancing on to the lawn, I looked up and surveyed the front of the mansion. It was three storeys high, of proportions not vast, though considerable: a gentleman's manor-house, not a nobleman's seat: battlements round the top gave it a picturesque look. Its grey front stood out well from the background of a rookery...So, anyway, Vivat Trust offers two appartments (
1 &
2) with all modern facilities, without crazy laughter echoing down the corridors but, alas, without Mr Rochester. However not everyone can boast of having stayed at Thornfield!
