It is well-known what great followers of political events the Brontës were even in childhood. So perhaps they would be highly amused by those references that put them together.
A few months ago it was
this unforgettable passing comment about George W. Bush. Today it is this poem 'dedicated' to no other than
Vice President Cheney:
Cheney's carrying a heavy load of guilt, after all, even for a guy with no visible conscience. Shades of Emily Bronte:
Sleep brings no rest for [sic]
me
The shadows of the dead
my wakening eyes may never see
Surround my bed.But there's also
references to them on the other side of the Atlantic:
The most high-profile young female MP in David "call me Dave" Cameron's party is Theresa Villiers, who sports some impressively flowing Wuthering Heights-style tresses, looking rather young, glamorous and different - all attributes that New Labour once sold themselves on. While a joke about "hair apparent" seems a touch obvious in this context, one cannot help but feel it is strikingly apt.If you're curious now, click
here to see a picture of Theresa Villiers and her tresses. Looking for the picture we came across
this portrait of a lady of the same name who shared the tresses as well (though in 1834!).
