Because the new film version of Pride & Prejudice is coming out soon, critics once again feel the need to join the Austen and Brontë names. You have to wonder what each of them would say to constantly see their names together in print!

As this article from the BBC reminds us, Charlotte Brontë was never a fan of Jane Austen:

In her critique of Austen's novels, Bronte wrote: "Anything like warmth or enthusiasm, anything energetic, poignant, heartfelt, is utterly out of place in commending these works. The passions are perfectly unknown to her."

But as the writer of the article comments, Charlotte then wouldn't know what to do with the polls that consider Pride & Prejudice the most romantic novel ever. Jane Eyre only reaching the second position in the ranking.

They're fighting their battle, huh? But we're willing to bet that if a new Brontë film was to be released it would reach the top position for a while.

The writer of a Guardian article comments on how

Jane Austen is a writer about whom pundits of all ages and sexes tend to get precious and proprietorial in a way they don't about, say, Charlotte Brontë or George Eliot.

Hmmm... but is that good or bad? And honestly, we are witnesses to the fact that Charlotte Brontë's fans (or Brontë fans in general) won't let you mess with their Brontës.
