Many critics cite Brontë’s noticeable personal prejudices throughout the story as well as a plot lacking intensity and depth as reasons to consider this the lesser of her four novels. They may be right on one level, but others note that Brontë cleverly used a male narrator to point out and address areas in which women weren’t treated as they should have been, most noticeably in the workforce and in terms of their pay.
Whether you see the story’s flaws or prefer to see its good points, “The Professor” deserves a read by anyone wanting another glimpse into the mind of the woman who gave us “Jane Eyre.” (Tammy Marshall)
