Today, September 7, in Brussels:
Sunday 7th September 2025
10:00 at Waterstones, Brussels

In 1842-43 Charlotte and Emily came to Brussels to perfect their French. They stayed at the Pensionnat Heger (a girls’ boarding school) and found an inspiring teacher in Constantin Heger, the man to whom Charlotte was to write impassioned letters. Her stay in Belgium inspired her novels The Professor and Villette.
Helen will tell the story of the sisters’ Brussels adventure. She will show you places the sisters knew, including parts of the old streets in their neighbourhood that miraculously escaped demolition in the early twentieth century, and tell you about some of those that have disappeared.
The walk will include readings from the novels and from the sisters’ letters and essays written in Brussels.
