The Great Southern Killarney was honoured to extend a very warm welcome [to] Nigel West of the Brontë Birthplace Limited, a descendant of Charlotte Brontë’s husband, Arthur Bell Nicholls.
Brontë was born Charlotte Nicholls [sic] on 21 April 1816 and she became a highly accomplished English novelist and poet.
She [was] elder sister of Emily, Anne and Branwell Brontë and she is best known for her novel Jane Eyre, which was published under the pseudonym Currer Bell.
Jane Eyre was a success on publication and is now acknowledged as a classic of English literature.
The Brontë connection to Killarney runs deep. In 1818, Rev Patrick Brontë wrote the novella The Maid of Killarney while residing in Thornton, Yorkshire.
Decades later, in 1854, Charlotte Brontë and Arthur Bell Nicholls stayed at the newly opened Great Southern Killarney, just days after the hotel first welcomed guests.
The visit was marked by the presence of local artist Dolores Lyne, Mayor of Killarney Martin Grady and Great Southern General Manager Jamie Power in a gathering that highlighted the links between community, culture and history.
“The occasion provided a meaningful opportunity to reflect on the enduring cultural legacy of the Brontë family and to celebrate the ways in which literature and heritage continue to inspire,” Jamie Power remarked. (John O'Mahony)
