A more well-known, but no less remarkable woman, will be the centre of the next event. Specialist in the Brontës and Elizabeth Gaskell, Graham Watson brings us the first biography of Charlotte Brontë in nearly a decade.
Gaskell uncovered secrets of illicit love, family discord, and professional rivals, and The Invention of Charlotte Brontë is the first detailed investigation of Brontë’s last years and Gaskell’s biographical writing. Watson reassesses Charlotte’s life and death, reconstructing the story of her cultural afterlife and more broadly how women’s histories have been presented.

This innovative work was staged and rehearsed in a remarkable four days. Running at an economical one hour, it provides an original new work for seasoned opera-goers and an attractive, highly digestible introduction for opera neophytes.
A cast of four young singers and an ensemble of eleven players, under the sure-handed baton of Chloe Lu Ye, deliver Rachel Sullivan’s lively, and at times soaring and cinematic score with aplomb. The young performers provide life and colour to this minimally but cleverly staged production. In particular, Jolanta Kudra is a spectacular find as Bertha. Crystal clear of voice, her acting abilities breathe believable life into the tortured titular character as does Caroline Boerner who is finely voiced as servant Alice. (Lauren Humphreys)
Ladies Disdain Productions has announced the debut of The Mrs. Rochesters, a groundbreaking adaptation of Charlotte Brontë’s classic Jane Eyre. At 7:30 p.m., July 3-5, and 2 p.m., July 6, at the Santa Fe Playhouse, audiences will experience a powerful retelling that centers Bertha, reclaiming her voice and humanity in a story that has long marginalized her.
Directed by Zoe Burke, this production amplifies the experiences of women of color and probes the racial and patriarchal structures woven into even beloved literature. In an era where women’s rights—especially those of women of color—remain under threat, The Mrs. Rochesters challenges audiences to consider whose stories are told, whose pain is overlooked, and what it truly means to resist societal roles. Written by Alexandra Avila and featuring a talented cast—including Mariah Montoya as Bertha, Hannah Machado as Jane, Victor Reyes as Mr. Rochester, Cal Lee as Peter, and Elizabeth Olton as Mama—this production is brought to life with scenic design and production photography by Quinten Avila, and costumes and wig design by Kaylee Silcocks.
“This adaptation invites audiences to see Jane Eyre through a new lens—lifting Bertha’s voice and challenging the stories we’ve been told. It’s a powerful reminder of the importance of representation and resistance in storytelling,” Director Zoe Burke said. (Carol A. Clark)
