An alert for today, July 18, in Malton:
The Invention of Charlotte Brontë:
Her Last Years and the Scandal That Made Her
by Graham Watson
Friday 18th July
7.30pm at Kemps Books, Malton | Book & Ticket Price £15 | Ticket only £6*
The first biography of Charlotte Brontë in nearly a decade reassesses her life and death – and reconstructs the shocking story of the creation of her cultural afterlife.
This is the first detailed investigation of Brontë's last years and Elizabeth Gaskell's writing of her iconic Life of Charlotte Brontë, published two years after Brontë's death and responsible for the creation of the Brontë myth. Based entirely on new first hand research, its conclusions – that Gaskell was forced into making a false claim to recant the controversial aspects of her biography – challenge much received wisdom about the Brontës, and about how women's histories have been presented.
Author Graham Watson joins us to talk about Charlotte and his new book we are promised a fascinating evening.
