Adaptations of classic works are tricky. In taking another crack at The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Jane Eyre or Anne of Green Gables, writers must convince an audience that the tale has contemporary relevance, while retaining enough connection to the original text to engage fans drawn to see the familiar story. Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë
Another notable novel in her collection is Emily Brontë's only book, Wuthering Heights. Published in London in 1847, the story is steeped in the traditions of Gothic fiction and romanticism. It follows Catherine Earnshaw, a woman determined to socially advance, and Heathcliff, an orphan boy whom Catherine's father brought to Wuthering Heights to live with them. Catherine and Heathcliff fall in love, but because of Heathcliff's lack of social standing, Catherine instead marries Edgar Linton. The book is darker than some from its time. (Molly Toolan)
Janhavi Deshpande: A friend of mine bought Wuthering Heights after watching a moody reel with violins. Don't even get me started on how many friends I have who finally read The Great Gatsby just to sound profound in Instagram captions. These were the same people who cried in school when they saw paragraphs longer than a tweet. It's a plot twist I didn't expect.
The Texas Tribune reports the debate and approval of the House Bill 3225, where "sexually explicit" books will not be available to teenagers in public libraries. What the Republican politicians consider "sexually explicit" seems not to be limited to porn:
Books that could fall under the bill’s definition of “sexually explicit” include classics and common high school reading including Wuthering Heights, The Lord of the Rings, As I Lay Dying and Catch-22, Rep. Erin Zwiener, D-Driftwood, said. (The bill maintains an exception for “religious materials.”) (Kayla Guo)
Zenda Libros (Spain) explores the books of Muriel Spark:
Una tarde que visité la casa-museo de las hermanas Brontë y los páramos que la rodean, imaginé a Catherine y Heathcliff y casi distinguí en la distancia el viejo edificio de Cumbres Borrascosas. No me es del todo ajena, pues, la sensación de encontrar resquicios de la ficción en un espacio real, ni la satisfacción de percibir un espacio real mediado por una novela que he leído. According to Clarín (Argentina), Wuthering Heights was the 2nd best-selling book at the stand of the El Aleph bookstore at the 49.º Feria Internacional del Libro de Buenos Aires. The Brontë Sisters UK YouTube channel visits Edinburgh and retraces Charlotte Brontë and George Smith's visit.
