Industry plants or the next big thing? That was the debate that raged around buzzy newcomers The Last Dinner Party for several months of the year, but – fittingly for the lyrics of their biggest song – none of that really matters anymore. The all-female five piece, who sit somewhere between Florence and the Machine, Queen and a BBC adaptation of Jane Eyre, feel original and exciting, if heavily stylised. The final single from their 2024 album Prelude to Ecstasy was “Caesar on a TV Screen”, a feminist rhapsody that captures the band’s essence: whiplash-inducing tempo changes, youthful melodrama, Gothic grandeur, righteous anger and the promise of empowerment as frontwoman Abigail Morris imagines herself becoming an emperor to finally find universal approval.
