A contributor to The i Paper says that 'I’ve listened to 1,612 songs this year – these 10 defined 2024'. She mentions Jane Eyre when discussing one of them:
10. “Caesar on a TV Screen” – The Last Dinner Party
Industry plants or the next big thing? That was the debate that raged around buzzy newcomers The Last Dinner Party for several months of the year, but – fittingly for the lyrics of their biggest song – none of that really matters anymore. The all-female five piece, who sit somewhere between Florence and the Machine, Queen and a BBC adaptation of Jane Eyre, feel original and exciting, if heavily stylised. The final single from their 2024 album Prelude to Ecstasy was “Caesar on a TV Screen”, a feminist rhapsody that captures the band’s essence: whiplash-inducing tempo changes, youthful melodrama, Gothic grandeur, righteous anger and the promise of empowerment as frontwoman Abigail Morris imagines herself becoming an emperor to finally find universal approval.
