This is the program for the 2024 Brontë Day Public Lecture organized by the Brontë Society of Japan. It commemorates the day in 1826 when Patrick Brontë gave his children 12 wooden soldier figurines from Leeds, marking the beginning of the Brontë literary works.

The lecture will be held on Saturday, June 1st, 2024 from 2:00pm to 4:10pm at Waseda University, Tokyo. There are two lectures scheduled:

Lecture I (2:05pm - 3:00pm) by Associate Professor Miwa Yakuhara:

"The Symbolic Meaning of Flowers in the Brontë Sisters' Novels and the 19th Century Trend of Natural History and Floriography in Britain"

Break (10 minutes)

Lecture II (3:10pm - 4:05pm) by Former Professor Izuyo Shimizu:

"Literary Devices in Wuthering Heights"
