From Charlotte Brontë grieving Emily to Ted Hughes lamenting a lamb, this exceptional anthology of poems is full of scholarly discernment [...]Part of the interest for the reader is in judging whether an elegy is moving or not. There is no mistaking Charlotte Brontë’s grief in a raw poem about Emily’s death, reliant on the comfort that her sister does not have to share the anguish her death has caused. (Kate Kellaway)
1847: Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë is published. What really needs to be said about this absolute giant of a gothic classic? One of the most brilliant and genre-defining works of gothic literature, Wuthering Heights sets the tone for the Victorian Gothic movements in its incorporation of class divides, truly evil personages, and ghosts. (Cat Tatu)
EmilyHad enough Austen? Explore another famous woman writer of the 1800s with 2022's Emily about Emily Brontë. Emma Mackey stars as the author as she recounts the (fictionalized for the movie) events of her life that inspired Wuthering Heights. (Lia Beck)
6 Hannah Grose (The Haunting of Bly Manor)Hannah Grose is a big fan favorite in The Haunting of Bly Manor. She has a sort of mysterious Jane Eyre quality to her character. She's kind, contemplative, and devout, and she reaches out to Dani as they have similar roles — she as the housekeeper and Dani as the childcare.Hannah is an exercise in dramatic irony from the start to finish of Bly Manor. Her romance with Owen is achingly sweet. In another world, they would have been so happy together. Her interview scenes with Owen that walk her through acceptance are a stellar example of how sensitive the writing can be in a ghost story. (Vera W.)
