Jane Eyre, written by Charlotte Brontë, is a classic novel that explores the journey of its protagonist, Jane Eyre, as she navigates through various challenges and societal expectations. The novel, published in 1847, stands out for its portrayal of feminist themes, which were groundbreaking during the Victorian era. In this article, we will delve into the feminist elements present in "Jane Eyre" and how the book challenged prevailing gender norms. (Sanskar Tiwari)
The Lineup lists upcoming books that 'revamp classic monsters':
My Brother's Keeper
By Tim Powers
This book is a fantasy retelling of Emily Brontë’s life, in which she confronts demons and fights werewolves—all in a day’s work. Drawing on the writings of Emily and Charlotte Brontë, as well as his own imagination, this work blends the historical and the paranormal. This standalone is similar to works in his other series, including the Fault Lines series and the Vickery and Castine series, in that it will leave readers coming back for more.
Who should read it? Fans of paranormal histories, and anyone interested in adaptations or retellings of Wuthering Heights. (Stephanie Sandaula)
The Irish Times interviews the writer and musician Susanna Hoffs:
As a template for helping her craft the story, Hoffs went to the classics. “I read Jane Eyre many times preceding the writing of the book and reread it during the writing. I also read Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca, which I thought had similar themes I wanted to explore – can the ghosts of our past haunt us or prevent us in such a way that we can’t have happy lives? I think everybody has some version of that.” (Tony Clayton-Lea)
Deseret News suggests adding Wuthering Heights to your reading summer list:
If you’re looking for good, old-fashioned, petticoat-ruffling drama, why not go back to the classics? Look no further than “Wuthering Heights,” written by Emily Brontë of the famous Brontë sisters.
The novel follows Heathcliff, the brooding foster son of West York’s Earnshaw family, as he falls for Cathy, who’s a class above him. His relationship with Cathy proves to be ill-fated and Heathcliff devotes his life to ruining her family. (Natalie Issa)

Calling all Kate Bush fans!
💃🏻 If you’re a fan of British singer/songwriter Kate Bush (whose “Running Up That Hill” became a global mega-hit last summer due to “Stranger Things”), then you’ll definitely want to be in Candler Park on July 29.
The eighth-annual, international “The Most Wuthering Heights Day Ever” will take place in Atlanta and more than 45 cities around the globe.
Fans of Kate Bush and her 1978 hit “Wuthering Heights” – a lyrical retelling of Emily Bronte’s famous novel – gather to recreate the dance routine from the music video wearing a similar red dress.
Organizer Kim Manning said it’s a “non-profit, very silly, and joyous volunteer-led event.” Now’s the time to find a dress and learn the choreography!Collin Kelley, Sammie Purcell and Madison Auchincloss)

The same call to Bunbury, Australia fans in South Western Times

Brit+Co lists recent period drama movies:
Emily
My Letterboxd review after seeing Emily in theaters basically called this family the English, more tragic version of Little Women's March sisters. The celebration of creativity and identity feel even more powerful against the darker aesthetic and all of the painful experiences Emily Brontë lives through. Plus, it has one of the most emotional scores of 2023. (Chloe Williams)
TVOvermind publishes an article about the actor Blake Draper:
His favorite book is Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights and Heathcliff is a role he will give anything to play. (Banks Onuhoa)
Patch Salem has a local alert for next July 29th:
Join us in the Salem Athenaeum garden for this lively, thirty-five-minute performance! Actress Julie Butters portrays some of classic literature's most exciting leading ladies, along with historical women who created brilliant works in defense of their gender. Among the twelve featured women are Jane Eyre and Elizabeth Bennet, Mrs. “Marmee” March and Joan of Arc, social reformer Olympe de Gouge, and suffrage orator Anna E. Dickinson. A short Q&A will follow the presentation. (Carolyn McGuire
CBR makes a list with the best early 200s romance anime:
Sweet Blue Flowers is a classic romance about two young women finding love. It's one of the few older titles that explores a Sapphic romance without fetishizing or exploiting it. Akira and Fumi begin as friends but as they grow older, their friendship grows into something more.
The series handles their love in a thoughtful way, using a drama club rendition of Wuthering Heights as a backdrop and commentary on their romance. The literary lovers Cathy and Heathcliff want to find love and peace together, but societal restrictions contort their love and eventually strangle it. Akira and Fumi have a more hopeful future, though. It's rare to find a vintage yuri that validates and understands its audience. (Vera W.)
Actors too good-looking for the role they had to play on Unbranded:
Michael Fassbender's transformation into Charlotte Brontë's Mr. Rochester in the movie adaptation of Jane Eyre surprised many. In the novel, Rochester's features were described as unremarkable, yet the on-screen portrayal by Fassbender exuded striking handsomeness. Despite the initial divergence from the book's description, Fassbender's captivating performance as Rochester won over the audience, leaving little room for disagreement about his talent.
