A columnist from the TCI Sun, discusses a book published in 1997, Here on Earth by Alice Hoffman.

“Here on Earth” [1997] is an unashamed re-vamp of Emily Brontë’s “Wuthering Heights” [1847] albeit moved from Yorkshire to a small town in Massachusetts.

Ok, I didn’t mind Laurence Olivier having a go at playing Heathcliff in the 1939 movie, (although less so Timothy Dalton in 1970 or Ralph Fiennes in 1992); and I liked Kate Bush’s 1978 song, “Wuthering Heights", but I confess that I really can’t see the point in re-writing somebody else’s novel. There are a few minor plot changes and even, pre-MeToo and Johnny Depp, Heathcliff is now a wife-beater with a shady criminal background. (Richard Bendall)
