An editor's work

Time Out London reports that the National Portrait Gallery is reopening next week, which is great news.

Admittedly, it’s more than just a lick of paint, they’ve built a whole new wing. The Blavatnik Wing is funded by the same guy (Sir Leonard Blavatnik) who funded Tate Modern’s new building and is also paying for new galleries at the Imperial War Museum. The guy’s addicted to museum funding. It’s due to house more than a hundred years of British portraits, from 1840-1945, with depictions of major figures like Charles Darwin, Oscar Wilde and the Brontë sisters by artists including John Singer Sargent, Laura Knight, Gwen John and Lucian Freud. Sir Leonard Blavatnik was, of course, also responsible for saving the Honresfield collection.

The New York Times mourns the death of illustrious editor Robert Gottlieb. His explanation of what it is to be a good editor is priceless.

“The editor’s relationship to a book should be an invisible one,” Mr. Gottlieb told The Paris Review in 1994. “The last thing anyone reading ‘Jane Eyre’ would want to know, for example, is that I had convinced Charlotte Brontë that the first Mrs. Rochester should go up in flames.” (Robert D. Alcuni dettagli del film sembrano verosimili, altri, frutto di creatività.  O’ Connor non mira a ricostruire nel dettaglio l’esistenza della poetessa, ma a restituirne, per quanto possibile, il mondo interiore, le contraddizioni, il tumulto e l’atmosfera familiare in cui la scrittrice è cresciuta, vivendo a tratti serenamente, più spesso in maniera tormentata.

Emily non vuole essere quindi un ritratto fedele e minuzioso della vita della poetessa e scrittrice. E per fortuna, perché alcuni Biopic sono soffocati proprio dall’esigenza di rimanere fedeli alla ricostruzione reale. Ciò che conta qui, è la restituzione del suo mondo intimo ed emotivo.

Si tratta dunque di un film ispirato in cui la passione gioca un ruolo fondamentale, perché l’inquietudine della protagonista si percepisce ovunque e il sentimento è vissuto da Emily in silenzio, al riparo dagli sguardi indiscreti. Lo stesso amore diventa, in un secondo momento, un serpente strisciante, logora interiormente perché non può essere dichiarato ed espresso. Provoca gioia ed eccitazione, poi però logora, ferisce e porta all’abbandono in solitudine. E sarà proprio quel senso di emarginazione, unito all’ urgenza di mettere su carta l’ardore e il tumulto interiore personali a permettere la nascita di Cime tempestose, unico e splendido romanzo pubblicato da Emily Brontë.

Ottimo esordio alla regia per Frances O’Connor che confeziona un racconto intimo, personale e generoso mettendo in luce il carisma della giovane Emma Mackey, finalmente qui, in un ruolo da assoluta protagonista. (Sarah Mataloni) (Translation)

Sous ce climat, elle fait irrésistiblement penser au personnage de reporter tête brûlée joué par Mel Gibson dans L’Année de tous les Dangers – ce film fait-il partie de vos inspirations ?

Alors je n’ai pas pensé du tout à Mel Gibson, mais j’aurais pu ! J’ai tellement été attirée par Margaret, je l’ai tellement trouvée magnifique – dès que je l’ai aperçue dans le film de Tarantino – que je n’en ai pas démordu, c’était elle ou personne. Et finalement, je ne regardais qu’elle. Et au fond, cette adaptation innée qu’elle a à tout, à la chaleur, à la pluie, à se lever tôt, à se coucher tard, est dingue. Ça n’était pas un tournage très très friqué, il y avait un certain inconfort par rapport à des films américains. Cette confiance, c’était peut-être une forme de folie de sa part. Je sens qu’il y a quelque chose en elle qui est fou. Elle est capable de basculer.

Un côté Emily Brontë ?
