The Times parodies the reunion between Rishi Sunak and Emmanuel Macron at COP27.
Not since Wuthering Heights has there been such a reunion: rushing steps, an embrace, petting. ‘Heathcliff!’ ‘Cathy!’ This time it occurred not on a Yorkshire moor but at Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt when President Macron of France espied his fellow technocrat. ‘Rishi!’ ‘Emmanuel!’ Mwaw.
The encounter took place in what they call “the margins” of the climate change conference but looked more like a white-walled vestibule outside the backstage gents. Macron was seen running towards Sunak and seizing him in a clinch. Sunak seemed the less eager — the more maidenly, we might once have said — but Macron is notoriously handsy, slipping an arm round counterparts’ backs in an attempt to own them. Sunak wriggled out of his Gallic grasp. (Quentin Letts)
The Guardian on the latest goings-on in The Archers:
At Brookfield, Jill and her paramour, Leonard, decorated the spare room ready for its first B&B guests, thoughtfully furnishing it with a copy of The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, a novel strongly deprecated by Pip Archer, who believed it might be by the author of that “depressing” one with Cathy and Heathcliff in it. No, Pip, it’s an early feminist classic by Emily Brontë’s sister, Anne, about a woman living in a village with her young child in seclusion from the dissolute father. I’d pop it on your reading list if I were you. (Charlotte Higgins)
