Injamamul SarwerJagannath University Journal of Arts, Vol. 9, No. 1, January-June 2019This paper attempts a comparative analysis of two pieces of work: Charlotte Brontë‟s novel Jane Eyre and Satyajit Ray‟s movie Charulata. The protagonists of these two works represent the role of women in their contemporary societies where they come across both psychological and survival struggles. Despite the struggles, the main characters seem to be able to create their distinguished identities in the midst of patriarchal domination. However, at the end, none of the struggles of the women comes into any satisfactory end; rather these struggles remain open-ended leaving some clues to the continuity of the previous or the beginning of a new struggle. This recognizes the nineteenth and twentieth century works as still relevant in our contemporary society
