William Wyler’s 1939 adaptation of one of literature’s great love stories has a lot going for it, especially a chiseled young Laurence Olivier as the tempestuous Heathcliff. Together with Merle Oberon, as his star-crossed love, and Geraldine Fitzgerald, as the woman he marries out of spite, Olivier dominates the frame as the characters, and the film, flare with passions and suppressed hurts.
