Walking into the shop feels for a moment like walking back in time. Vintage posters exhort wartime women to, for instance, Join the Wrens, the British women’s naval service. But the present is here, too. In the window is a blowup of Sen Mitch McConnell’s ill-tempered remarks about Sen Elizabeth Warren in 2017, using language that sounds decidedly Jane Eyre-ish: “She was warned. She was given an explanation. Nevertheless, she persisted.”
Persistence is one way to describe the philosophy of the shop itself, which began 20 years ago as a mail-order publishing business reprinting forgotten titles from an era in women’s fiction beloved by its founder, Nicola Beauman. Having come into a small inheritance from her father, she opened the business with a list of 12 books that first year. (Sarah Lyall)

La lecture d’Orpha Phelan, tout à fait littérale, a l’avantage de l’esthétique (notamment grâce aux projections oniriques sur le fond de scène) mais pèche par son statisme dans certains passages, qui renforce l’une des faiblesses du livret : les longueurs qui laissent la tension retomber à plusieurs reprises.
Ceci étant, l’œuvre se révèle passionnante par son naturalisme à la Zola, exaltant les passions (la réaction de Heathcliff à la mort de Cathy en est un bel exemple) et ses multiples références musicales qui l’ancrent au cœur du XXème siècle, après Debussy dont se retrouve l’orchestration mystérieuse et la prosodie (très britannique en l’espèce), et avant Britten, dont il annonce les déchaînements mélodiques d’un Peter Grimes. Jacques Lacombe, à la tête de l’Orchestre symphonique et lyrique de Nancy, se montre clair et précis dans sa battue, obtenant en retour un résultat cohérent de ses musiciens. La musique sombre et grave, symbolisée par les angoissants trombones et les percussions (timbales et grosse caisse) martiales, les violoncelles cinglants, les violons stridents ou le contrebasson râpeux, se révèle très visuelle (ce qui n’est guère étonnant, le compositeur Bernard Herrmann ayant œuvré pour le cinéma).
