by Villalón Criado, Lourdes

Issue Date: 2018
Degree: Grado en Estudios Ingleses
Jane Eyre is considered a classic of 19th century English literature. This novel extolled Charlotte Brontë as one of the best writers of the Victorian period. Although Jane Eyre was presented as an autobiography, it is not a proper autobiography. However, this term has been essential to establish theories about the biographical content of Brontë on her novel. More recent genres such as autofiction have helped to identify the process by which real aspects are represented by fictional facts. This essay collects the most relevant anecdotes of the life of Brontë, as well as the controversial reactions to her novel, such as the vindication by William Shepheard. The aim of this essay is to establish the connection between real events of the life of Brontë and the fictional elements in her novel. The analysis focuses on the first ten chapters of her work, which correspond to the childhood of the protagonist, and where there are many similarities with the life of Brontë.
«Wuthering Heights» by Emily Brontë: Frame and Embedded Narrators in the Novel
by Alla Pavliuk and Svitlana Kushnirchuk
№ 3 (2017): Науковий вісник Східноєвропейського національного університету імені Лесі Українки
Emily Bronte is one of the most prominent authors of the nineteenth century who lived quite a short life, but contributed a lot to the development of such a literature genre as a novel. Undeservedly she was criticized for her works during the lifetime mostly, but fame and recognition reached her personality for the only novel she wrote, «Wuthering Heights» posthumously.
E. Bronte’s novel is a powerful work that uses traditional literary form, but nonetheless manages to overturn the conventions of the novel. Her works convey basic truths about human experience that are as meaningful nowadays as they were in mid-nineteenth century. More than one and a half centuries has passed already from the time the novel was published, but there still exist a lot of debatable questions and a number of them lack a sufficient amount of research surveys.
The category of a narrator in «Wuthering Heights» has not been explored completely yet, especially in Ukrainian literature studies, what actually introduces the relevance of the research. The narrative structure of the novel has been compared to a Chinese box – a matched set of boxes of decreasing size, so that each fits snugly inside the next. This story has several different narrators, whose tales are inserted inside one narrative.
