Agnes Grey was published in 1847 and was the first book by Anne Brontë, the youngest of the Brontë sisters. Anne wrote this book while her sisters were working on their books. Emily Brontë is likely the best known for her book Wuthering Heights and Charlotte Brontë for the book The Professor.
Agnes Grey centers on a governess who is also a rector’s daughter. It follows the challenges in her life as she ends up in charge of taking care of unruly children. Agnes copes wit her challenges through her romantic relationship and appreciate for nature. Brontë spends a great deal of the book making subtle commentary on the attitudes of the upper class.

Though it was never received by the public with the enthusiasm of Jane Eyre, The Professor is Charlotte Brontë’s first novel. Following the exploits of William Crimsworth as he finds his way in the world, The Professor greatly influenced Brontë’s later novels as she grappled with the stylistic challenge of writing from a male perspective.
The story itself is one of inner struggle to discover one’s true purpose, as William rejects the life his aristocratic family and his tyrannical brother had in mind for him, travelling to Brussels instead to become an educator.
