The
Halifax Courier chats with scriptwriter Sally Wainwright, her most famous script - to us, anyway - is
Sparkhouse:
Keen followers of Sally's work will recall the gritty drama Sparkhouse, which starred Joe McFadden and Sarah Smart and brought critical acclaim for the writer back in 2002. It was inspired in part by one of Sally's all-time favourite novels, Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights. (Virginia Mason)
The
Guardian comments on last night's first episode of the new screen version of
Tess of the d'Urbervilles.
There's something familiar about this Tess in Tess of the D'Urbervilles (BBC1, Sunday). Hide her long chocolatey hair under a bonnet, bump her up the social scale a few notches, and, yes, that's it, she was Elizabeth Bennet only the other day, in Lost in Austen. Gemma Arterton is clearly cleaning up in period drama. She'll be playing Jane Eyre, Dorothea Brooke and Cathy Earnshaw next. Actually, she's in Quantum of Solace next, the new Bond movie. Good move, otherwise she'd get stuck in the past, bonnet-cast, as Keira Knightley has done. (Sam Wollaston)
Not that we want to be guilty of 'stucking her in the past, bonne-cast' but now that he mentions it we rather think that
she'd make quite a good Cathy.
As for the blogosphere -
Justine Picardie has a delightful post on Cold Comfort Farm and its Brontë connections.
Factual Imagining writes about screen adaptations of Wuthering Height, with particular attention to the forthcoming ones, as does
Brontës.nl in Dutch.
Just My World posts about Jane Eyre and
Journal of a bibliophile writes briefly about Anne Brontë's The Tenant of Wildfell Hall.

I watched Tess last night and Gemma absolutely captured the role (you can see my comments on the imdb forum).
ReplyDeleteI agree: she'd make a perfect Cathy.
I said the exact same thing while watching Tess last night. Although, i'm happy with Charlotte Riley and Abbie Cornish. Gemma does scream Cathy. Do you remember the 20th Century Fox WH project, that Michael Hirst was writing a script for. If there was to be any movement on that. Gemma would be a contender for sure.
ReplyDeleteShe was brilliant as Tess last night. I was very moved by her performance.
Haven't watched Tess yet, just pictures, but I'm really glad to hear both your comments.
ReplyDeleteHopefully, someone working on a new version - there always seems to be someone doing just that - will think exactly the same.
