The BBC website of Jane Eyre keeps on growing and now offers a clip of the first episode that starts next Sunday 24th September 2006, 9pm, on BBC ONE.

What is somewhat confusing is that the BBC informs that the second episode will be aired Sunday 1st October, 5.45-6.45pm.

But back to the clip now. It shows the very first interview between Jane and Mr Rochester. It doesn't follow the novel dialogue to the letter but keeps the tone and spirit and overall manages to be very faithful to the atmosphere. We catch the first glimpses of Cosima Littlewood as Adèle too.

We especially like the setting. Not over-illuminated at all, it gives the impression of a more than real 19th century evening with only the glow of the fire and a few candles.

The more we see, the more we like Ruth Wilson and Toby Stephens as Jane and Rochester. If we are to judge by what we have seen so far, we would be ready to believe that this could be a milestone in Jane Eyre screen adaptations.

I agree as well! And Ruth seems to be my favorite on-screen Jane so far..she's captured the spirit of the Jane Eyre from the novel, especially in her eyes.

I think it'll be a milestone and I have a lot of faith in Sandy Welch, especially after her work with N&S.

  2. Yes, Ruth Wilson looks so natural as Jane. So far she's my favourite as well. And not only that - because that's easy bearing in mind what I think of the others :P - I actually like her a lot as Jane. Her face, her voice, her gestures (or lack thereof) are all suitable.

That's right, if N&S is anything to go by - which probably is - I'm positive this is going to be fabulous.
