A new television programme entitled The Brontës: An Irish Tale, which includes some footage on the Banagher connection with the famous literary family, will be broadcast on Tuesday February 1st on BBC One Northern Ireland and on the BBC iPlayer at 10.35pm. The programme lasts about 30 minutes.Presenter Aoife Hinds (Derry Girls, Normal People, The Last Call) will explore the strong Irish connections that had a lasting impact on the Brontës, their work and their legacy in locations throughout Ireland and Yorkshire.Charlotte Brontë and Arthur Bell Nicholls of Banagher married after a long courtship and spent most of their honeymoon in Ireland. The film will feature locations in Banagher where Arthur lived for forty-five years after Charlotte's death, and discover that it is thanks to Arthur’s love for Charlotte that much of the iconic Brontë memorabilia survives to this day. Another event in the second half of the festival will be a presentation of the classic 20th century novel Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys which will focus on its hidden Northern Ireland connections.The novel is set in Dominica where a leading Belfast merchant has a plantation. It is a prequel to Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre, regarded as her most “Irish” novel. Her father Patrick was born in Rathfriland in Co Down and there is a marine link between the Sargasso Sea and Lough Neagh. (Noel McAdam)

Heathcliff e Catherine Earnshaw (Cime tempestose)L’opera di Emily Brontë ci pone davanti a una delle storie più autodistruttive mai scritte, ma ha un pregio: non ha la pretesa di nascondere la realtà dei fatti.L’idea di amore raccontata dalla Brontë è dichiaratamente quella di una passione che consuma, tra due persone che non hanno altro modo di vivere il proprio destino se non tendendo l’una verso l’altra. E, in effetti, il sentimento che i due protagonisti nutrono l’uno per l’altra è una vera e propria ossessione che diventa, col tempo, sempre più malsana.La relazione tra Catherine e Heathcliff è problematica sin dall’inizio: entrambi sono persone complesse e dal passato difficile che, nel corso della storia, causano dolore a se stesse e a tutti quelli intorno. I due, legati da sempre l’uno all’altra, crescono a Cime Tempestose: lei figlia del ricco proprietario, lui un trovatello adottato da quest’ultimo. Pur sapendo di amare Heathcliff, Catherine preferisce sposare un uomo più raffinato e socialmente elevato, dando il via a una spirale di reciproco disprezzo che porta lui ad allontanarsi e lei all’esaurimento nervoso.Ha quindi inizio un annoso e articolato piano di vendetta da parte di Heathcliff, che riesce a ridurre in miseria la famiglia di Catherine creando una faida interna, acquistare la proprietà in cui questa vive insieme al marito, e persino sposare una donna per la quale prova ben poco solo per vendicarsi dell’amica d’infanzia. Catherine, nel frattempo, ha cominciato a soffrire di seri problemi neurologici e, dopo la sua morte, il suo fantasma continua a infestare la tenuta dove lei e Heathcliff erano cresciuti insieme.È evidente in questa storia quanto l’amore tra i due protagonisti sia malsano e ossessivo al punto da trascendere la mortalità della donna, il cui spettro continua a tormentare non solo il suo amato, ma anche gli eredi della tenuta di Cime Tempestose. Durante tutto il corso della storia, i protagonisti non fanno che farsi del male a vicenda, anche per vie traverse, maltrattando volutamente i rispettivi cari nel tentativo di ferirsi l’un l’altro in una spirale di gelosia, odio e desiderio che distrugge le famiglie di entrambi.
