Today Anne Brontë celebrates her 186th birthday. Our weekly quote (see sidebar) is in her honour, as a tribute to the baby she once was. A really endearing anecdote and, as many biographers have pointed out, a very appropriate little something as far as her character was concerned, for she was always "sweet, gentle Anne". We don't discredit this at all, but we would also like to remind the general public that she was also the strong woman who wrote The Tenant of Wildfell Hall - possibly the most controversial novel published by a Brontë sibling and one that not even Charlotte dared republish after Anne's death.

We don't know what Anne's birthday wish would be, though we have a few guesses. Goodness knows we try and bring her into the spotlight as often as we possibly can, but the news and publications related to her are scarce. So our birthday wish for her at BrontëBlog is for her to stop being the "overlooked sister in the shadow" and start reigning in her rightful place, at the same level as her siblings. Here's to it!

Happy birthday, Anne!
